USS WHIPPLE (FF-1062)

Commander Laabs, originally from Las Cruces, New Mexico, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1964. His first assignment was to USS GRIDLEY (DLG-21) where he served in various billets in the Weapons Department. After completing the Department Head course at Destroyer School, Commander Laabs served as the Weapons Officer on the USS LYMAN K. SWENSON (DD-729). He then assumed command of USS PAGE COUNTY (LST-1076).

Commander Laabs earned his Masters Degree in Operations Research while attending the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. His next assignment was Flag Secretary for Commander Cruiser Destroyer Flotilla Four followed by attendance at the Armed Forces Staff College. After completing his studies at Staff College, Commander Laabs served as the Executive Officer of USS MANITOWOC (LST-1180).

Prior to his current command of USS WHIPPLE, Commander Laabs, a proven sub specialist in Plans and Programs, completed a tour with the Systems Analysis Division of the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations.

Commander Laabs is married to the former Mardell Cole of Long Beach, California. They live with their children, Stephen, Jennifer, and Julie at Hospital Point Officer's Housing on Pearl Harbor Naval Base.
