USS WHIPPLE (FF-1062)

Commander Svendsen graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1967. His first duty was aboard USS PERRY (DD-844) where from 1967 to 1969 he served as First Lieutenant, Navigator, and Gunnery Officer. Commander Svendsen's next tour was as Navigator of the commissioning crew for USS EL PASO (LKA-117) from June 1972 to February 1974. During this time Commander Svendsen made two combat deployments to the Western Pacific and earned the CINPACFLT Junior Officer Shiphandling Award in 1973.

Commander Svendsen's next tour was as an NROTC instructor at the University of Minnesota from 1974 to 1977. While at the NROTC unit Commander Svendsen earned a Masters Degree in Organizational Psychology and Speech Communication. He also won the first annual VINCENT ASTOR Leadership Essay Contest sponsored by the United States Naval Institute in 1975. Following his tour at the University of Minnesota, Commander Svendsen reported to USS RANGER (CV-61) in July 1977 where he served as first Lieutenant and briefly as Navigator until February 1980.

Commander Svendsen assumed his current duties as Executive Officer of USS WHIPPLE in May 1980. He is married to the former Janet Ouellett of Fall River, Massachusetts
